One Saturday of every month, we welcome you to the farm to get involved with what’s going on on the land and for seasonal celebrations, nature-based taster-sessions and mini-workshops. It’s a wonderful chance to see what’s been happening on the farm, learn new skills and enjoy a relaxing, fun day with like-minded company!
This month we’ve got some a really good one planned for you! As well as a morning of communal farm activities - including learning how to plait garlic with Lauren Simpson from Parc y Dderwen - we’ll be celebrating Wales Nature Week by welcoming Tim Hollis and Helen Peake to guide us on a nature walk to meet the life that we share Lords Park with.
Tim has been surveying the farm for his main MSc Ecology research project this year, studying dawn birdsong, ground nesting birds, invertebrates, bats and reptiles across the whole 134-acres of the farm. Helen is a committed volunteer here, and has been studying the hedgerows across the farm for her own studies, and along with Dai Stacey, has been surveying the species of Lords Park for the Big Meadows search. Their work is forming a vital part of creating a baseline picture of the biodiversity and ecology of Lords Park as it is now, in the early years of our tenure.
We’ll begin with some exercises and games to help us get in the right frame of mind, tune our senses and ground on the land before we head out to see what species cross our path, and hear from Tim and Helen about what they’ve been finding. All ages are welcome! If you have binoculars, please do bring them with you!
As ever, we’ll be having a bring-and-share lunch, so please do bring a dish for the lunch table on the Saturday. Vegan-friendly dishes are encouraged to ensure that the spread suits everybody! We’ll have lunch around 12.30pm. We’ll provide refreshments through the day and everything else you might need, including mugs, plates and cutlery. Waterproofs and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended!
