‘Fairshare’ Solidarity Veg Boxes

We believe in a healthy, sustainable world where healthy, nutritious food is a right for all, a commons, not a commodity, where food can bring us into a closer relationship with our local lands and with the ecosystems that support us. Where local food growing can nourish the mind, body and soul of everyone in the community.

We also believe that we can support each other within our communities.

That's why last year, in response to COVID-19 and a rise in food bank use, we appealed to our community of members to give a couple of extra pounds a week to our Solidarity Fund, if they could, to subsidise boxes of veg for the food bank. The response was overwhelming. Many were glad to help, and knew that the fund might support them later if they fall on hard times.

Over the winter, we were able to get together the resources to create a whole new Solidarity Veg Box scheme. We'll identify families who would really benefit from a weekly box of healthy, nutritious, ecologically-grown veg & support and guidance on how best to use it. They'll stay with us for the whole season, just like our CSA members, and immerse in the joys and health benefits of seasonal, local eating.

COVID-19, Food Poverty & Food Bank Use

The impacts of Coronavirus and the lockdown have had huge economic effects, and many have fallen outside of the government's various financial safety nets, driving them into crisis. Food bank use across the country has surged. In Carmarthen, Food Bank use has increased by 54% during the lockdown, with them feeding over 700 people.

But let's be clear, this was a problem way before COVID-19. Food poverty is one of the great injustices of our society. The pandemic revealed our fragility. The economic effects will be felt long after the lockdown is lifted and 'normality' is restored, too.

Our solidarity fund will continue to support food bank users and local families in need as long as donations keep coming and as long as the veg keeps growing.

“Solidarity is not an act of charity, but mutual aid between forces fighting for the same objective”

Samora Machel

“It's wonderful to have the option of fresh stuff to add in as well, the nutritional value of that stuff is amazing to be able to give out to families"

Miriam, Carmarthen Food Bank Manager.
